This unit on the Sun includes a number of assessment tools. The individual lessons contain work sheets to give on-going feedback on student comprehension. You will also find an easy pre- and post-assessment of the entire Sun unit for students to see what they have learned. The post-assessment is provided at the end of the unit.

Duration of Activity:
20 minutes.

Student Prerequisites:
None.

Materials:

  • Work sheets
  • Pencils and crayons
  • Lined paper

Teacher Preparation:
Allow time to make copies of the work sheet.

Objectives:
The pre-assessments will indicate:

  1. What students know about the Sun at the outset of the unit.
  2. Students' scientific misconceptions.

Grade Level:
Grades 1-3

Procedure:

  1. Encourage students to think about what they know about the Sun.
  2. Distribute work sheets and ask students to draw the Sun and label any parts of it that they know. Distribute lined paper and ask students to write what they know about the Sun.
  3. Add work sheets and writing to student work portfolios.
